Family - British progressive rock band, worked out an unusual style, which was attended by elements of blues, folk, jazz, rock and cabaret and psychedelia. A unique characteristic of the group was a constant presence in her more than two multi (Rick Grich, John "Poli" Palmer, John Wetton), to create complex sound collages. Regularly touring in conjunction with Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, The Nice and ELP, Family, in contrast, did not succeed in America, remained in the history of the eternal leader of the British underground late 60s - early 70s. His first band, The Farinas (later turned into The Roaring Sixties) guitarist John "Charlie" Whitney formed as a student of Art College in Leicester. With him playing bass guitarist Tim Keerqin drummer Harry Ovenall and saxophonist Jim King. In 1965 he was replaced by Rick Keerqin Grich, Ovenalla - Rob Townsend, and a year later joined the band, Roger Chapman, who had a voice that (in the words of one critic) "... could kill a small animal within a hundred yards." Subsequently, however, it has become the Achilles heel of vocalist Family. Its possibilities were limited to a narrow range, which he apparently did not understand and was always trying to hit the high notes that he was given. One critic called Chapman's vocal style "electric bleating", another described it by Bob Dylan Marc Bolan. Family name suggested American producer Kim Fowley: group, speaking in baggy double-breasted suits, exploited the gangster image. Already in the 1967 Family were declared to be "the new British sensation" and released their debut album Music in a Doll's House (1968), which was preceded by the single Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens / Gypsy Woman (October, 1967). Though vocal Chapman had direct relation to the traditions of blues and rhythm and blues, arrangements, rich strings, mellotron, woodwinds, had all the signs of early art / progressive rock. The album peaked in the UK to 35 places and was enthusiastically received by critics ... In 1969, Rick moved to Grich Blind Faith and was replaced by John Weider (ex-Eric Burdon and The Animals). At the end of 1969 (after the band along with The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park) from the King came out and was replaced by multi-instrumentalist John "Poli" Palmer. Anyway, this fourth album is divided into the concert and studio side (side 1 recorded live at Fairfield Halls in Croydon (London); side 2 - a collection of studio recordings). Family moved here from experimental rock to a more or less orthodox structures. The album was received by critics restrained ... After the collapse of Family Whitney and Chapman formed a blues-rock band Streetwalkers (there on the blog)....
